Spotlight: A Sunrise Proposal at Maroon Bells

There’s something really special about starting the day before the world wakes up. Matt chose to propose to Mel as early in the day as possible to avoid crowds and get that stunning morning glow on the Bells.

As the sun slowly came up behind the peaks, the mountains lit up with that soft, golden glow that Maroon Bells is known for. It was quiet, peaceful, and felt incredibly intimate. It was like the entire place was just theirs for a moment.

No crowds. No distractions. Just a breathtaking backdrop and one of the biggest moments of their lives.

Moments like this are exactly why so many couples choose this spot not only for proposals, but for their Colorado elopement ceremony as well.

How to Plan a Maroon Bells Proposal (or Elopement)

Plan for Sunrise

Sunrise is hands-down the best time for both a Maroon Bells proposal and a Maroon Bells elopement. Yes, waking up early can be daunting. BUT you get fewer crowds which is key for a more private and intimate experience with your partner. This also allows you to wander through the hiking trails with less people around, making it easier to get stunning photos of just the two of you. Another benefit of arriving early in the day is you are blessed with softer, more flattering light.

Understand Permits & Reservations

Because Maroon Bells is such a popular destination, planning ahead is key.

Timed Entry & Shuttle Reservations

In order to get to Maroon Bells, you have two options:

  1. Book spots on a shuttle that will take you from the Maroon Bells Welcome Center, located at Aspen Highlands Ski Area to the Maroon Bells. This is probably the easiest way to get to Maroon Bells, as you can wander around for as long as you want and take a return shuttle that runs every 30 minutes & head back to your car. Reservations can be made here.
  2. Reserve a parking spot at the Maroon Bells Trailhead This is ideal for those who need to start their adventure early before the shuttle bus begins at 7:00 AM, or those who wish to visit in the evening after 5:00 PM. Some important things to note: parking spaces are VERY limited. Also, between May 22nd and October 18th, you must arrive before 8:00 AM, or after 5:00 PM depending on the reservation type. Reservations can be made here.

Access Varies by Season

Every season has different access rules! All updates can be found on their official website here.

Special Use Permits May Apply for Ceremonies

This is especially important if you’re planning a Maroon Bells elopement or micro wedding ceremony. Permits are not needed if you are just wanting an intimate experience with you, your partner, and your photographer. If you want to include more people in your day, then a special use permit may apply. If you want to rent out the amphitheater for your micro wedding, reservations are needed and they book up fast – sometimes it is hard to get reservations for the amphitheater in the same calendar year!

Choose the Right Location Around Maroon Bells

There are several beautiful options depending on your vision:

  • The lake shoreline (classic reflection views)
  • Quiet, off-path areas for more privacy
  • Scenic trails for a more adventurous feel

For proposals, choosing the right spot can make all the difference. If you arrive early in the day, you can probably pop the question at the lake shoreline with the classic reflection views. This is an incredibly popular spot for landscape photographers to post up and hang out though, so it is not the most ideal spot if you want more privacy.

For elopements, choosing the right spot can also make all the difference in how your day flows. Similarly to proposals, it depends on the time of day. There are plenty of off-path areas that allow you to say your vows in privacy, there are scenic trails to get some adventurous couples photos too.

4. Keep It Simple & Intentional

Whether you’re planning a proposal or elopement in Colorado, it doesn’t need to be complicated. The landscape already does so much of the heavy lifting.

What you Need to Bring:

  • Your ring(s)
  • Layers for cold mornings or chilly sunsets
  • Optional personal touches (flowers, vow books, etc.)
  • Water (if you want to adventure around)
  • Dog treats, leash & water bowl (if you want to bring your furchild)
