If colorful wildflower meadows, alpine lakes, mountain views, and a cute little mountain town sound like your kind of wedding day, you’re going to love all the possibilities when eloping in Crested Butte, Colorado!
Known as the Wildflower Capital of Colorado, Crested Butte is tucked into the Elk Mountains and surrounded by some seriously incredible scenery. We’re talking mountain passes, aspen groves, waterfalls, turquoise alpine lakes, and SO many opportunities to get outside and explore.
One of my favorite things about this area is that you can have a beautiful mountain ceremony AND spend the rest of your wedding day doing something fun together. Like hiking through wildflowers, kayaking on an alpine lake, exploring mountain roads, or wandering around downtown Crested Butte for food and drinks.
I spent a full summer day scouting and photographing locations around Crested Butte, from sunrise near Snodgrass Mountain to an afternoon kayaking adventure at Emerald Lake and sunset in the mountains, finishing it off with a fantastic dinner in town. And let me tell you, there’s a reason this area deserves a spot on your Colorado elopement wishlist.
So if you’re wondering how to elope in Crested Butte, where to find the best ceremony locations, or what season to choose, I’ve got you covered!

Why Elope in Crested Butte, Colorado?
Crested Butte is one of those Colorado mountain towns that has a little bit of everything.
It’s surrounded by the Elk Mountains, which means you have access to incredible scenery without needing to spend your entire wedding day hiking. There are places where you can drive up into the mountains, take a short walk to a beautiful overlook, or head out on a longer adventure if that’s more your speed.
During summer, the hillsides are covered in colorful wildflowers. In fall, the aspen groves turn golden yellow, and in winter, the entire area transforms into a snowy mountain playground.
And then there’s downtown Crested Butte, with its colorful buildings, amazing restaurants, coffee shops, and laid-back mountain town atmosphere.
magine kicking off your wedding day watching the sunrise over the mountains, hiking through colorful wildflowers, and exchanging vows with some pretty freaking incredible views. Then, because why the heck not, spend your afternoon kayaking on an alpine lake, exploring mountain roads, or bopping around downtown Crested Butte for some food and drinks before heading back into the mountains for sunset.
Seriously, HOW FUN does that sound?! And that’s what I love about eloping in Crested Butte. There’s so much to see and do that your wedding day can turn into one heck of an adventure, filled with all the things you two actually love doing together.
Best Crested Butte Elopement Locations
Okay, now for the really fun part. Where should you actually elope in Crested Butte?
There are countless beautiful locations in this area, and each one offers something different. Some are close to town and relatively easy to access, while others involve hiking, rough mountain roads, or a little extra adventure.
Here are some of my favorite Crested Butte elopement locations to consider.

1. Snodgrass Mountain & Teddy’s Trail
If you’re dreaming about wildflower meadows with mountain views, the Snodgrass area is an incredible place to start. Located near Mount Crested Butte, this area has rolling hillsides, beautiful summer wildflowers, aspen groves, and views of the surrounding mountains.
I explored the beginning of Snodgrass Trail and Teddy’s Trail around sunrise during my summer scouting trip, and the morning light was such a beautiful way to experience this area.
One thing I love about Snodgrass is the variety of scenery you can find without needing to commit to an all-day hike. Depending on the route and season, you can explore meadows, wooded sections, and open views of the valley. It’s also a great area to consider for couples who want their elopement to include a short hike and plenty of time to explore other locations.
Keep in mind that trails around Crested Butte can have seasonal closures and access restrictions, so it’s important to check the current rules before planning your ceremony.
Best for: Wildflowers, sunrise, mountain views, short hikes, and summer elopements.
2. Judd Falls & Copper Creek Trail
Want waterfalls AND beautiful mountain scenery? This area is definitely worth checking out. Judd Falls is located just outside Crested Butte, and the trail offers a beautiful combination of forest, mountain views, and access to a waterfall overlook.
One of the things I love about Crested Butte is that you can visit multiple locations throughout the day and get such a variety of scenery without having to travel across the entire state. The Judd Falls area is especially appealing for couples who enjoy hiking and want to incorporate a little exploring into their elopement. You can also stop into the little town of Gothic to experience how scientists study the beautiful Crested Butte wildflowers!
If you’re hoping to include waterfall scenery, we’ll want to consider trail conditions, accessibility, and where a ceremony would actually be appropriate.
Best for: Waterfalls, hiking, forest scenery, and couples who want a little adventure.
3. Emerald Lake
THIS is one of my favorite locations from my Crested Butte adventure.
Emerald Lake is a gorgeous alpine lake surrounded by mountains, with that beautiful blue-green water that makes you want to stop and stare for a while…. Or if you’re crazy like me, jump right in.
Getting here is part of the experience. The road beyond Gothic is rough and requires planning around road conditions and vehicle capability, so this is definitely a location where transportation matters. But once you’re up there? Freaking incredible.
I’ve spent time exploring and photographing couples at Emerald Lake, and trust me, this place is absolutely gorgeous! Between the turquoise water, towering mountains, and opportunities to get out and explore, there’s SO much you can incorporate into your elopement here. And yes, I’ve even photographed couples kayaking on the lake with their dog!
Emerald Lake is a popular destination during summer, so privacy isn’t guaranteed. If this is somewhere you’re considering for your ceremony, I’d recommend thinking carefully about timing, visitor traffic, weather, your car, and the exact location.
Best for: Alpine lakes, kayaking, adventurous couples, mountain views, and summer elopements.
4. Kebler Pass
If you’ve ever seen photos of Colorado mountains absolutely covered in golden aspen trees, there’s a good chance Kebler Pass has popped up in your search.
Located west of Crested Butte, Kebler Pass is known for its enormous aspen groves and gorgeous fall colors. During summer, the surrounding meadows and forests are beautiful too, but fall is when this area really steals the show. You can make the scenic drive part of your elopement adventure, explore accessible trails, and find incredible scenery among the aspens.
Just remember that Kebler Pass is a seasonal road, and fall color timing changes every year. If you’re dreaming about those golden trees, we’ll want to keep your date and location plans flexible.
Best for: Fall elopements, golden aspens, scenic drives, and forest scenery.
5. Lake Irwin
If you’re looking for an alpine lake that’s generally easier to reach than some of Crested Butte’s more remote locations, Lake Irwin is another beautiful option.
Located near Kebler Pass Road, Lake Irwin has mountain views, forest scenery, and opportunities for outdoor recreation. This could be a fun area to consider if you want to incorporate paddleboarding, kayaking, or a lakeside picnic into your wedding day.
It’s also a popular campground and recreation area, so you’ll want to consider crowds, parking, and where your ceremony or activities are allowed.
Best for: Lakeside adventures, water activities, summer elopements, and mountain views.
6. Washington Gulch
Washington Gulch is another gorgeous area to consider for a Crested Butte elopement, especially if wildflowers and open mountain views are high on your wishlist.
The scenery changes as you head farther into the mountains, with rolling meadows, rugged peaks, and beautiful views throughout the area. Depending on where you want to go, some sections are easier to access than others. Higher portions of the road can require a more capable vehicle, and seasonal conditions play a big role.
For couples who love exploring and want to get a little farther into the mountains, Washington Gulch is definitely worth researching.
Best for: Wildflowers, mountain views, scenic drives, and adventurous elopements.
7. Woods Walk
If you’re planning an intimate ceremony with a few guests and want a more established ceremony location, Woods Walk is a great option to consider.
Located close to downtown Crested Butte, Woods Walk is surrounded by aspen trees with beautiful mountain scenery nearby. The Crested Butte Land Trust manages a designated wedding ceremony site here, which makes it different from simply choosing a random spot along a public trail.
You’ll need to reserve the site and follow the current ceremony rules, but it can be a great option for couples who want a defined ceremony location without heading deep into the backcountry.
Best for: Intimate ceremonies, guests, aspen trees, and convenient access from town.
8. Peanut Lake
Peanut Lake is another designated ceremony location managed by the Crested Butte Land Trust. Located close to town, this area offers open views of the mountains and a lakeside setting that’s relatively accessible.
It’s a good location to consider if you’re bringing guests or want a ceremony that doesn’t require a big hiking adventure. Because the area is close to popular recreation routes, privacy and visitor traffic are worth considering. You’ll also need to reserve the designated ceremony site and follow the Land Trust’s requirements.
Best for: Lakeside ceremonies, intimate weddings with guests, mountain views, and easier access.
9. Paradise Divide
If you want a Crested Butte elopement with some serious mountain adventure, Paradise Divide might be right up your alley.
This high-elevation area offers rugged mountain scenery and incredible views, but reaching it involves narrow, rough mountain roads that require appropriate vehicles and experienced drivers. This is one of those locations where the journey is a major part of the experience. And because it’s high in the mountains, weather and seasonal road access can change your plans quickly.
For couples who love off roading and want a more adventurous experience, Paradise Divide is worth exploring with the right preparation.
Best for: High elevation views, off road adventures, rugged scenery, and adventurous couples.
When Is the Best Time to Elope in Crested Butte?
The best time to elope in Crested Butte depends on the scenery you love and what you want to do during your wedding day.
Because a summer wildflower elopement and a snowy winter elopement are going to look VERY different here.
Summer: June Through August
If you’re dreaming about colorful wildflowers, summer is probably going to be your favorite season.
Crested Butte is known as the Wildflower Capital of Colorado for a reason, and July into early August is often a beautiful time to explore the meadows and mountain trails.
Summer also offers the best opportunities for reaching many higher elevation locations, although snowpack and road openings vary from year to year. This is when activities like hiking, kayaking, paddleboarding, and scenic mountain drives really shine.
But summer is also popular, and afternoon thunderstorms are something we need to plan around. That’s one reason I love sunrise elopements in the Colorado mountains. You can take advantage of the morning light, often enjoy quieter trails, and leave room in your timeline to adjust around changing weather.
Fall: September Through Early October
If golden aspens are more your vibe, fall in Crested Butte is pretty freaking amazing.
Kebler Pass is especially popular for its fall colors, but you’ll find beautiful aspen scenery throughout the area. September can also bring cooler mornings, shorter days, and changing mountain conditions. Fall color timing varies every year, so it’s important to keep that in mind when choosing your date.
And because higher elevation roads can close with early snow, I always recommend having a backup location.
Winter: December Through March
Dreaming about a snowy Colorado elopement? Crested Butte could be a really fun option.
You have skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, cozy mountain town activities, and beautiful winter scenery.
A winter elopement could mean exchanging vows somewhere snowy, exploring downtown afterward, and finishing the day with a celebratory dinner. But many of the high elevation locations available in summer aren’t accessible by regular vehicles in winter.
So if you’re planning a winter Crested Butte elopement, we’ll want to choose locations and activities that actually work with the season.
Spring: April Through Early June
Spring in Crested Butte can be a little unpredictable.
While lower elevation areas of Colorado might be warming up, the mountains around Crested Butte can still have significant snow, muddy trails, and seasonal road closures. This is often referred to as mud season, and some businesses operate on reduced schedules during the transition between winter and summer.
If wildflowers or high elevation alpine lakes are your priority, I’d recommend considering later in the summer instead. But if you’re flexible with scenery and locations, spring can still offer opportunities for a quieter mountain experience.
Do You Need a Permit to Elope in Crested Butte?
The short answer? It depends on where you want to get married!
Some Crested Butte elopement locations require permits or reservations, while others have different rules depending on the number of guests, ceremony setup, and activities you’re planning.
And with SO many incredible places to choose from, figuring out which locations allow ceremonies can get a little confusing.
But here’s the good news: You don’t have to figure all of that out yourself!
As your Crested Butte elopement photographer, I’ll help you research locations, navigate permit requirements, and figure out the logistics so you can focus on the fun stuff, like choosing between wildflower meadows, alpine lakes, and mountain adventures!
How to Get Legally Married in Crested Butte, Colorado
One of the coolest things about eloping in Colorado is that you can self solemnize your marriage!
That means you and your partner can legally marry yourselves without needing an officiant or witnesses. You can exchange vows, sign your marriage license together, and create a ceremony that’s meaningful to you.
You’ll still need to obtain a valid Colorado marriage license from a county clerk and follow the state’s requirements. If you’re staying in Crested Butte, the Gunnison County Clerk & Recorder is one nearby option, although you can obtain your marriage license from another Colorado county too.
Colorado marriage licenses are generally valid for 35 days after issuance, and you’ll need to return your completed license within the required timeframe.
And yes, you can absolutely invite family or friends to celebrate with you if that’s what you want! You can check out my full blog post including everything you need to know about eloping in Colorado here.
What Can You Do During Your Crested Butte Elopement?
This is one of my favorite parts of helping couples plan their elopement. SO MANY ACTIVITIES!
Your wedding day can definitely include so much more than a ceremony and some pretty portraits.
I’ve spent time exploring and photographing couples throughout Crested Butte, from colorful wildflower meadows and mountain trails to turquoise alpine lakes. And let me tell you, this area has SO much to offer! I’ve even photographed couples kayaking on an alpine lake, because why stop at gorgeous mountain views when you can get out there and have some fun, too?!
Imagine starting your morning with coffee and a hike through the wildflowers, exchanging vows somewhere surrounded by mountains, and spending the afternoon kayaking on an alpine lake.
You could head into town for pizza, grab drinks together, explore a scenic mountain road, or plan a picnic somewhere beautiful.
If you’re more adventurous, you could incorporate mountain biking, horseback riding, skiing, or snowshoeing depending on the season.
And if you’re more of a relaxed adventure kind of couple? Spend the day wandering around town, taking a scenic drive, and enjoying a lakeside picnic.
There’s no requirement to fill every hour with activities, either. Sometimes having the freedom to sit somewhere beautiful and enjoy being married is exactly what you want.
The point is to build your wedding day around what you actually enjoy doing together.

Where to Eat After (or During) Your Crested Butte Elopement
After a full day of exploring the mountains, exchanging vows, and celebrating your favorite human, you’re probably going to be HUNGRY! Luckily, downtown Crested Butte has some awesome restaurants where you can keep the celebration going.
Elk Ave Prime
Want to celebrate with a fancy dinner? Elk Ave Prime is an upscale steakhouse serving incredible cuts of meat, delicious sides, and a great selection of wine and cocktails. With its cozy mountain lodge atmosphere, it’s a great spot to dress up, raise a glass, and celebrate being MARRIED!
Soupçon
If a romantic dinner for two sounds like your kind of celebration, check out Soupçon! Tucked away in a historic cabin just off Elk Avenue, this intimate restaurant serves French-inspired fine dining with seasonal ingredients. Perfect for couples who want to end their elopement day with an extra-special dining experience. And honestly one of the best meals I have EVER had.
Bonez
More of a tacos and margaritas kind of couple? Same same. Bonez is a colorful, lively tequila bar and grill with Mexican-inspired food, fun cocktails, and plenty of personality. It’s a great choice if you’re looking for a laid-back celebration with delicious food and a fun atmosphere. And BONUS: they have a dog-friendly patio! So if your pup is joining your Crested Butte elopement, this could be a fun place to grab a bite together afterward.
The Hideout
Looking for something casual with a fun twist? The Hideout serves up creative comfort food, including burgers, bao buns, and Korean-inspired dishes. The Hideout also has a dog-friendly patio, so if your pup is joining your Crested Butte elopement, this could be a great option.
Can You Bring Your Dog to Your Crested Butte Elopement?
If you’re thinking about bringing your dog along, I can tell we are going to get along. 🐾
There are dog-friendly areas around Crested Butte, but the rules can vary depending on the trail, land manager, wildlife protections, and time of year.
Some locations have leash requirements or seasonal restrictions, and more rugged adventures might not be the best fit for every pup. That’s something we can work through when choosing your ceremony location.
Maybe your dog joins you for the ceremony and some portraits before heading back with a trusted friend. Or maybe we choose a location and activities where they can be part of more of the day.
Either way, I love helping couples find ways to include their dogs in their wedding day!

How Long Should Your Crested Butte Elopement Be?
This really depends on how you want to spend your wedding day.
If you’re imagining a simple ceremony, one beautiful location, and time for portraits afterward, four hours might be exactly what you need.
But if you want to explore multiple areas, include activities, take a break for food, and catch both morning and evening light, a longer elopement gives you a lot more flexibility.
For example, you could start with sunrise vows near Snodgrass, explore another area afterward, take a midday break, and finish the day kayaking at an alpine lake and watching the sunset in the mountains. And none of that means you’re spending eight hours posing for photos. You’re spending your wedding day exploring, celebrating, eating good food, and enjoying the experience together while I document it all.
That’s what makes a longer elopement so much fun.

How I Help You Find the Perfect Crested Butte Elopement Location
You do NOT need to know exactly where you want to get married before reaching out. Actually, I kind of love when you don’t. Exploring Crested Butte elopement locations is one of my favorite pastimes.
Part of what I do as a Colorado elopement photographer is help you figure out which locations make sense for the kind of wedding day you’re imagining. We’ll talk about the scenery you love, how much hiking you’re up for, whether you’re bringing guests or your dog, and what kinds of activities sound fun to you.
Then I can start narrowing down locations based on accessibility, seasonal conditions, privacy, lighting, and the logistics of getting from one place to another. And because I spend time scouting locations throughout Colorado, I know how important it is to consider what an area is actually like beyond the pretty photos online. Those are the kinds of details that help me make recommendations based on the experience you want, rather than just picking somewhere with a beautiful backdrop.
I’ll also help you think through backup locations and weather plans, because Colorado mountain weather definitely likes to keep us on our toes.
Tips for Planning Your Crested Butte Elopement
Before you start packing your wedding clothes and hiking boots, here are a few things I’d keep in mind.
Give yourself time to adjust to the elevation. Crested Butte sits at nearly 9,000 feet, and many surrounding locations are even higher. If you’re traveling from a lower elevation, arriving early can help you get settled and see how you’re feeling before heading into the mountains.
Think about transportation. Some locations are easy to reach, while others involve rough dirt roads and high-clearance vehicles. You’ll want to choose transportation that makes sense for the actual route.
Plan around the weather. Summer thunderstorms, changing temperatures, and early fall snow are all possibilities. Sunrise can be a great option, and having a backup plan gives us flexibility.
Choose activities that sound fun to you. Hiking, kayaking, mountain biking, scenic drives, or a relaxed afternoon in town are all possibilities. You don’t need to turn your elopement into an extreme adventure to have an incredible day.
Protect the wildflowers and mountain scenery. Stay on established trails and durable surfaces, leave flowers where they’re growing, pack out your trash, and respect wildlife and posted restrictions. We can create gorgeous wildflower photos without stepping into fragile meadows. I follow Leave No Trace Principles during all of my elopements!
Consider a weekday. Popular summer and fall locations can get busy, especially around festivals and weekends. If privacy matters to you, weekday mornings can be a great option.
